a conference for sheep and their shepherds under the care of the Great Shepherd

(For the Pretoria conference in Gauteng, go here:

The goal of Shepherds’ Conference Pietermaritzburg is to unite ordinary Christians in KZN around the age-old hallmarks of faithful Church ministry.

that is clear, gives the meaning of the text, and produces understanding (Nehemiah 8:8)
that counsels and worships (Colossians 3:16)
that worships and submits (Matthew 6:9-10)
that is spiritual and purifying (1 John 1:3-7)

Rick Holland—Rick Holland is the pastor at Mission Road Bible Church and teaching Expository Preaching at The Expositor’s Seminary in the USA. Previously he taught at The Master’s Seminary and was our own pastor’s preaching professor. He has been to South-Africa numerous times before, and will be joining us in KZN this year!

Carl Hargrove—Carl Hargrove is a professor of Pastoral Ministries at The Master’s Seminary, and a Biblical Counsellor qualified through the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, but spends most of his time as director of Grace Advance, the Church-planting ministry of Grace Community Church where John MacArthur is the pastor. He is no stranger to our own continent and country having ministered to us in Pietermaritzburg not too long ago.

Joel James—Joel James has been the pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Pretoria for over 25 years already and is also the academic dean of Shepherds’ Seminary in Johannesburg. His ministry of being a “pastor to pastors” has benefited our own pastor and Church in many ways, and his love of exalting Christ and building up the saints through clear Biblical preaching was evident at the previous Shepherds Conference already.

Frequently Asked Questions

What accommodation options are available? Pietermaritzburg is not that large, and the schedule has been arranged to avoid rush-hour traffic so you can arrive on time no matter where you choose to stay. We recommend looking into AirBnB options, or consider hotels like Roadlodge, Ascot, or StayEasy and others that have a good reputation online.

May women also come? Absolutely! As the subtitle says, this conference is for all Christ’s sheep. Some of the sessions are understandably aimed to be of particular blessing to our pastors and elders, but all Christians are welcome. We intend every session to contribute to the health of each Church represented.
