By Christians strive for holiness. Christians are those who put sin to death and put on righteousness. Righteous deeds done by faith are rewarded by God. But there is a way to waste your righteousness.
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 6:1
It is a righteous thing to give to the needy, but do so privately, and your reward will remain intact with God (Matthew 6:2-4).
It is a righteous thing to improve your prayers, but do so privately so as not to waste the reward of a perfectly good prayer (Matthew 6:5-6).
This principle can be applied to all your pursuits of righteousness. We tend to be more righteous in public than in private. Pray that the Lord will turn this tendency right around. Husbands and wives, love your spouses in obvious and visible ways, but love them in your secret prayers and private conversations too. Children, obey your parents when they are watching and when they are not. Work with hearty diligence at work even if it never gets noticed. Be courteous and thoughtful in your dealings with your neighbours and friends before they even know it.
Do not be disappointed with little earthly reward; aim for heavenly reward. Be even more righteous in private, than you are in public.
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven
