train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Tim 4:7b-8)

Saturday: DO SOMETHING ELSE

Ecclesiasters 3:12-13 I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.

Colossians 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

No doubt you’ve been wondering what the “do something else” in the original post of this series was all about. The “do something” comes from Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 – life is to be a joyful pursuit of “doing good”. It is better to do something than do nothing. An active pursuit of someting, even relaxation, is better than passively doing nothing. The “else” part of “do someting else” is to do something that is different to what you might normally tend to do. We tend to use weekends for self’s pursuits, but the challenge for those who would be godly, is to do good to others.

  1. Change your perspective. Saturday is not “my” for “myself”. Saturday is given you by God to “be joyful and do good” to “others”.
  2. Make a plan. Invest in someone today. Have someone over for coffee, pop into hospital to read and pray with a lonely patient, tick items off your spouse’s “honey-do” list. Learn a new skill. Serve the community in some way. Trim your tree that is growing over your neighbour’s property.
  3. Put on a new attitude: Whatever you invent to do today, go do it with joy for the sake of being more loving to those around you.
