So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,Philippians 2:1 (ESV)

This verse is our family memorisation verse for the week. Take one phrase per day, repeating the phrases already learned, and by the weekend even a five year old should be able to recite it with some level of comprehension. Here is some explanatory material to aid you in explaining it to your family.

“so if there is”—this prepares you for a ‘then’-like clause, which only comes in verse 2, so explain it to your family as a list of things that are true of Christians that all makes us very happy as verse 2 will explain.

“any encouragement in Christ”—the first item on the list of things that make Christians very happy is the help that Jesus Christ gives us (compare to Philippians 4:13).

“any comfort from love”—the second item on the list of things that make Christians very happy is the sense of peace that comes from knowing that God loves us.

“any participation in the Spirit”—the third item on the list of things that make Christians very happy is the Holy Spirit Who is working with us in all things.

“any affection and sympathy”—the fourth item on the list of things that make Christians very happy is the deep emotional care that we receive from God and from one another simply by being in God’s family.

God, in His full Trinity, is the reason Christians can always be very happy. The Son helps, the Father loves, the Spirit works, all with great care and compassion.

In really simple terms, Christians are very happy, because God is really kind to us!
