By Paraskevidekatriaphobia (Para-skevi-deka-tria-phobia ), or more colloquially known as “the fear of Friday the 13th”, is a superstitious fear upheld by many with various levels of sincerity. Christians might perhaps mock and joke about things like “Friday the 13th”, but we never need fear that perhaps there is something to it all.
Superstition has no place in true faith. We know better. We know Truth. Anything not revealed in Scripture is not to dominate our minds, emotions, fears, or convictions.
Colossians chapter 2 utters severe warnings, and thereby also tremendous peace to the Christian, not to get entangled in superstitious ideas.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:8
A Christian’s sense of spiritual life, security and vibrancy is found in Christ, not superstitions.
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
Colossians 2:16-17
A Christian need not be subjugated by the pressures of those who hold to superstitious beliefs pertaining to certain days being more or less holy. Live each day with the joy of sins forgiven (Col 2:14-15).
Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
Colossians 2:18-19
A Christian’s stability comes from growing in a church context; not from avoiding this or that habit, day, or practise because of some perceived awareness of the supernatural.
Ecclesiastes 8:15 has some advice for Friday the 13th.
And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
