One of the most frightening situations of life is that of a godly woman with an ungodly husband. Not surprisingly, it is exactly that situation where the Lord offers the most comforting of words. 1 Peter 3:1 mentions the situation of a godly woman married to a man who does not fear the Lord. In 1 Peter 3:6 such women are encouraged that they are in the company of Sarah, the wife of Abraham if …
… if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
Like the fears of a little girl are dispelled when her father is near, so the fears of every godly wife are dispelled when her heavenly Father is near, even if her husband does not do what is right.
This is tremendous comfort for any difficult and frightening situation. The book of Proverbs repeats this comfort for frightening times with these words:
Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.
Proverbs 3:25-26
What do we do when life is filled with potential disasters, loss, and hardship? We “do good and do not fear anything that is frightening”, “for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught”.
