“Never grumble” is so easy to say, but the moment we hear it said, we become guilty of disobeying it. We are so quick to grumble.
If “grumble” is a word that is perhaps not frequent in your vocabulary, I’m sure its sisters are better known: complaining, arguing, back-chatting, murmuring, criticising, moaning, protesting. You have witnessed these in daily life and even in your own behaviour, have you not?
Among the many ‘always’-and-‘never’ verses in Scripture, we find this one:
Do all things without grumbling or disputing
Philippians 2:14
To make it even more convicting, the previous verses are a wonderful motivation to pleasing the Lord and doing His will (Philippians 2:12-13), and then, very first on the agenda, is the matter of grumbling.
If there is one area of our behavioural habits that proves more about our spiritual condition than any other, it might well be this matter of grumbling. Fight the sin and the temptation to grumble, and you will be blameless and innocent in our very twisted society (Philippians 2:14-15).
