By Christianity is a mixture of the simple and the profound. The simple Gospel truth is “Believe in Jesus and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31), but the profound depths of Jesus being our propitiation is also true of the Gospel (1 John 2:2). The same is true for obedience. The commandments of the Sermon on the Mount deal with many issues of Christian living, and yet at the same time “just be nice” also pleases God.
In the midst of the rather intriguing complexities of Christianity that the book of Hebrews is filled with, we find this simple “just be nice” command with one of the sweetest and simplest motivations.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Hebrews 13:16
When you are irritated with someone, do them good. When you are tired, still do good. When you are confident in life, do good, not evil. When it easy, do good. When it is difficult, do good.
When you can meet a need, meet it. If you can show a kindness, do. Be nice to your spouse, be nice to your kids, be nice to your best friend, be nice to the client, be nice to your boss, be nice to the beggar, be nice to your neighbour, be nice to the people on the Whatsapp group, be nice on facebook, be nice to the person on the other side of the phonecall, be nice if you can give R1000 or just a smile.
The simplicity of obedience is: Just be nice, for God likes it.
