By Look up, Christian, the sky above your head is not only there to keep the earth’s physical properties in order so we can live. The sky above has a few spiritual purposes too. We need to look up a little more often.
Perhaps the most obvious theological reason for the sky above us, is to remind us of our Creator God.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
Psalm 19:1
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
God created all things. He made the sky above with all its fascinating scientific properties to be a loudspeaker of the Creator’s genius. Even if you know nothing of the physical intricacies of our sky, it is a marvel to behold. Pale blue at times, with only the sun passing through, other times dark with stars scattered all over it. It contains the wind and clouds. On special occasions it darkens with heavy clouds, only to light up from one side to the other for a mere second at a time. The sky is the Wikipedia of God’s handiwork.
But there is also another important theological reason to look up at the sky more often. It is from the sky that our Lord Jesus will come one day.
Remember the words of the angels after Jesus had been taken up into the sky?
Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.
Acts 1:11
Look up today to worship God for His handiwork, and look up today to hope in God for His Son’s return.
