We are to be as mindful of others (verse 4) as Jesus was when He became a man to die for us (verses 6-8). Verse 5 is the link between the instructions of verses 1-4 and the details about Jesus in verses 6 and following.
Through Jesus Christ we have been changed. Our minds have been renewed. So let us conform our mental activities to the way Jesus thought, and let those mental activities become so entrenched that they place us in a new mental state—a mental state void of selfish ambition and conceit (verse 3), defined instead by consideration and humility (verse 4).
