“train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Tim 4:7b-8)
Sunday: GO TO CHURCH
Hebrews 10:22-25 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Of all days, Sunday should be the easiest to train yourself for godliness. This is really a no-brainer, but two thousand years after the above verses were penned down, the body of Christ still sits at the bottom of many professing believers’ list of commitments. Some Christians are so infrequently at church, that when they do attend ‘their’ church, it is a pleasant surprise to the rest every time. Other Christians, though, are so faithful to Christ’s church, that when they miss one Sunday, the rest fear something seriously bad has happened.
- Plan to go. Most who don’t go to church today, do so because they didn’t plan to. Perhaps you planned, but to go elsewhere. Or you planned such a great Saturday night, that now even you believe the lie of “Sunday is my one day to sleep it”. Plan to go to church, and plan what will be needed to make the plan work.
- Plan to stay. Go to a church that places you under the teaching of the Word of God, that requires of you to fellowship with the saints, and that expects you to serve the church in ways that make you obedient to the Spirit.
- Plan to go again. Plan to have a better next-Sunday. Plan now already to have Saturday night end at a decent time to have the family ready without yelling on Sunday morning. As a group of young adults once quipped “Sunday morning begins Saturday night”.
