Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5
Like the other Beatitudes, this one exposes the irony of reality. In a world where it appears that the angry, loud, and self-confident always get ahead, we soon forget that the opposite is actually reality.
This beatitude is based on Psalm 37. It is, what I call, a “Reality Psalm”—a Psalm observing the obvious ways in which this world seems to operate, but then rising above such narrow-minded observations, and recognising, from the Word of God, how reality truly works.
Psalm 37 is about the evildoers who make you worry about this life. They do what is evil and wrong (1), they get ahead through anger and wrath (8), they plot and scheme (1, 32), they oppress and destroy (14), they exploit and rob (21), and through it all they seem to flourish (35).
Yet, that is merely a superficial observation of all of Reality. Because as the vast majority of the Psalm affirms, the LORD thwarts their plans and destiny, and watches over those who trust in Him and walk in His ways.
The point of Psalm 37 can perhaps be understood as “Do not worry about those who seem to get everything through wicked means, for the meek and righteous eventually get everything.”
Blessed are those who do not plot and scheme, yell and shout, for they will get everything.
