By Is your faith set on this world, or on God? What I mean is, do the realities of God determine the strength of your faith, or do the realities of this world and it’s affairs determine the ups and downs of your faith?
If all goes well, and then something suddenly changes, does your faith get a sudden blow, or perhaps, a sudden boost? Does your faith in God waver with the world, or it is as steadfast as God Himself?
The Sons of Korah in the OT wrote this song and sent it to the choirmaster to get the nation of Israel to sing of a faith that is fixed on God, not this world. It’s opening stanza is a good faith-stabiliser for saints of all times.
God is our refuge and strength,
Psalm 46:1-3
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear
though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
If the earth would move around and the local natural attraction be moved to the other side of the country, what would be your response? Would you see it as a reminder of God Who is the unmovable rock where safety, strength, and help can still be found?
Go and read the rest of Psalm 46 and identify the stabilising factor in all the good things mentioned, and notice the sovereign factor in all the bad things that happen.
It is true, literally true, that if even the earth would move around, God would still be the same faithful and present God as He had always been.
