In the simple historical record of Genesis chapter 1 is a mine full of theological insights. Not the least among them is the connection between the One Who speaks things into existence and then commands the things created to function in their proper manner. This is most notable on the fifth and sixth day.
Day 5:
Genesis 1:20 God pronounces a “Let …” statement indicating His creative intention.
Genesis 1:21 God’s pronouncement results in the creation of all kinds of creatures to fill the seas and skies.
Genesis 1:22 God blesses the newly created creatures with a command for them to thrive.
On Day 6 God creates the land animals, but it is with the creation of man and woman, that this Creator-Commander connection is seen once again.
Genesis 1:26 God pronounces a “Let …” statement indicating His creative intention as well as a “Let …” statement indicating their place among the other creatures.
Genesis 1:27 God’s pronouncement results in the creation of man and woman, but in light of their place among the other creatures, this verse stands out with its poetic expression.
Genesis 1:28-30 God again blesses His new creations with commands for them to thrive.
As you and I live each day on God’s world, let us remember that He made us, we are His, and His commandments are the key to thriving in what He surrounds us with each day.
