Like the Psalms are the very personal expression of worship throughout the ups and downs of life, like Ecclesiastes is the life-story of Solomon turned into words of wisdom, and like Proverbs is the words of the wise recorded for all who seek wisdom, so Job is the collection of essays for the despairing. The lengthy nature of these essays might discourage one from reading them, but they merely parallel the length of some of the trials of life that eventually lead us to utter despair.

Here are some of the proverbial nuggets from Job that spring from faith while in the pit of despair.

Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?

Job 4:6

As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause.

Job 5:8

If you will seek God and plead with the Almighty for mercy, if you are pure and upright, surely then he will rouse himself for you and restore your rightful habitation.

Job 8:5-6

God is wise in heart and mighty in strength—who has hardened himself against Him and succeeded?

Job 9:4

With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.

Job 12:13

Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?

Job 15:11

I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!

Job 19:25-27

Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. receive instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.

Job 22:21-22

May these, and many more like them, be like little steps, one at a time, lifting your faith up to God again.
