By Sometimes the vocabulary in one language makes it difficult to translate certain words into another language. By comparing different possible translations, we can nonetheless grasp the full significance of the original language. This is evidently the case in Romans 12:10 which is translated the following ways in different translations.
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; (or outdo one another in showing honor)

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

The key point of this verse is clear – this calls for an excessive care for one another.
The first part of the verse is about love, devotion, sweet affection for one another as spiritual family. The second part of the verse is about selfless honour and preferential treatment. Together it is a strong call to love other Christians in ways that exceed the love they show you. This love is to be characterised by sibling devotion, kindness, affection, and honour. This love is not just the profound love of self-sacrifice, but also the daily love of wanting to be with one another, caring for one another, thinking highly of one another.
Twice the terms “one another” reminds us that this is special church love – this is what we express and feel towards those at our church. May we therefore as a church know this verse, take it to heart, and make it evident to those who join us in our home groups, prayer meetings, outreach events, and corporate worship.
