As frightening as the concept of fighting sin, temptation, the Devil, and demons might be, it is wonderfully encouraging to realise that spiritual warfare is something every Christian from every age and place has successfully engaged in.

After calling Christians to humility and reminding Christians of God’s care of us in all our worries, the Apostle Peter writes this about spiritual warfare.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9

The Devil really exists and is really intent on destroying Christians. We have an obligation as Christians to resist him. This will require great firmness in our faith. But we can always know, that the same kind of spiritual battles that we face, are being experienced by Christians throughout the world.

Simply by being a Christian we attract the attention of those who hated Christ. But if we keep our thinking clear about what Scripture says, not getting intoxicated by society’s ideas of spiritual warfare, then we will be able to resist the Devil simply by continuing firmly in the faith that saved us. If God brought us out of the kingdom of darkness and placed us into the kingdom of light, certainly He will keep us there. In fact, that is exactly what Peter reminds us all of in the next verses.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 5:10-11

Christians are not able to resist the Devil because of some special revelation, special gifting, or special calling. All Christians, throughout the world, are able to resist the Devil because God will take care of us. We are going to suffer harm because of the Devil’s schemes, but we will be strengthened and established by God Himself. Let us therefore never give in, nor in the least slacken our resolve to stand firm in the truth of God and His work in us.
