By It is good to know that the Bible is not just a random collection of spiritual sayings, but has been given to us through specific human contexts. This brings a profound richness and relevance to what would otherwise have been a very abstract book on spirituality.
The whole Bible can be summarised in three verses.
Genesis 3:15
Sin entered the world, but God prophesied of “the seed” that will come and solve the problem of sin.
John 3:16
This well-known verse links God’s Promised One to the man in history called “Jesus Christ”.
Philippians 2:9-11
The purpose for which God acts in the lives of His creatures is so all will submit to His beloved Son as “Lord”.
The golden thread through all of the Old Testament (Genesis-Malachi) is the preservation of the line through which the promised “seed” of Genesis 3:15 will come.
The Gospels (Matthew-John) are the account of the arrival, life and death of that promised One summarised in John 3:16
And the rest of the New Testament (Acts-Revelation) are how the whole world can come to know about God’s Son so they can respond correctly to Him as Philippians 2:9-11 says.
The good news of the purpose of the Bible is that God acts in the lives of mankind, and He does so by promising a Saviour, fulfilling His promise, and revealing to us the details so we can all gladly and humbly submit to Jesus Christ our Lord!
