The “fountain of eternal life” is a concept often associated with fairy tales at best, or false worship at worst. But, like most things in life, the fairy tales and false worshipers stole their ideas from the Truth.
There is a Biblical fountain of life, yes, even a fountain of eternal life in the Scriptures. As Christians we will do well to seek that fountain, drink deeply from it, and reap not only a good life now, but eternal life to come.
There is in Scripture an earthly fountain of life – a source of water here on earth, that when one drinks of that water, one receives tremendous wisdom for this life. There is a progression into this earthly fountain of life. First, one must come to know, fear, and believe in the LORD God.
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life,
Proverbs 14:27
that one may turn away from the snares of death.
To know how to live well, and how to avoid the things that bring about destruction, one must drink deeply from the fountain of the fear of the Lord which is none other than true faith in God.
With faith in God as the starting point, the fountain of life offers much, much more through the teachings of other wise men and women.
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
Proverbs 13:14
that one may turn away from the snares of death.
The only thing remaining to gain the refreshing benefit of the true fountain of life, is to take this life, and live it.
Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it,
Proverbs 16:22
but the instruction of fools is folly.
To put New Testament phrases to these three Proverbs, the fountain of a successful earthly life begins with faith in God, continues with the teaching and admonition of the godly, and renews the mind so as to live a Christ-like life.
This earthly fountain of life is a mere temporary preview of the fountain of eternal life.
In Psalm 36 the Psalmist acknowledges the earthly benefits of the fountain of life, but uses terminology of the Kingdom of Heaven, drawing our minds beyond this life to eternal life.
For with you is the fountain of life;
Psalm 36:9
in your light do we see light.
Jesus is the visible form of this divine fountain of eternal life.
whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:14
When this life is all over, there is free, unending access to the fountain of eternal life
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Revelation 21:6
Don’t let fairy tales and false religions destroy what God has so clearly revealed. Rejoice that there is no more quest for the fountain of life. It has been clearly presented to all mankind and is freely available. Call people to come and drink. Live so they will see you have been drinking from an eternal source of wisdom, light, and life.
