Psalm 119:68 affirms unequivocally that God is good. The necessarily conclusion is equally profound: God does good. Nothing that God has ever done is bad, and nothing that is bad has ever been done by God.
You are good and do good
Psalm 119:68a
Since this truth about God is often the first thing the world will question, deny, or ignore, God has, in His goodness, given us His word to explain just how wonderfully true this truth about Him is – especially in light of all the evil that fills our lives. Psalm 119:68 in its entirety says this:
You are good and do good
Psalm 119:68
teach me your statutes
In God’s Word we read how when God had completed the creation of the universe, and specifically this earth with mankind in His image, that it was all very good (Genesis 1:31). Then, mankind, with the tempting aid of the Devil, brought sin into this world. Since then, much evil exists in this world, and every expression of it can be traced directly back to man’s sin (Romans 5:12).
But God is good and does good. Not even the sinfulness of man can overcome the goodness of God in this world. Joseph had the insight to comment on his rather up-and-down life with the realisation that not only does God make from nothing everything very good, but God’s goodness is so natural in Him that He can even turn the evil deeds of man into good.
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
Genesis 50:20
God’s goodness is the anchor in the souls of the believing that through the worst of evils in this world, He is good and does good and we can gain some understanding of it all through His Word.
And though this world, with devils filled,
Martin Luther, “A mighty fortress is our God”
Should threaten to undo us;
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us.
