Elihu, one of Job’s younger friends, didn’t understand Job’s situation very well, but he did have a good understanding of who God really is. Elihu was sensible enough to recognise why mankind should fear God and stop following their own ways.

In short poetic form we read this from Elihu.

God is clothed with awesome majesty.
The Almighty—we cannot find him;
he is great in power;
justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate.
Therefore men fear him;
he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.

Job 37:22-24

God is in a realm of His own—a realm we cannot even comprehend, leave alone discover and participate in.

God is called the all-mighty. He has all power to do whatever pleases Him. Surely that instils a level of fear and trepidation in us!

However, especially compared to mankind, God will never use His great power for wickedness. He will never violate His own code of character defined as a strict adherence to justice and a over-abundance of righteousness.

Therefore men fear him.

All sensible people fear God. They fear Him for His greatness. They fear Him for His power. They fear Him for His justice. They fear Him for His right-ness. Sensible people fear God because He is all of these things continually all the time.

God is always majestic and never humiliated. God is always strong and never weak. God is always right and never wrong.

Those sensible enough to know God, fear God, and are grateful that God doesn’t take into account our self-conceited opinions, thoughts, and explanations. Instead, we worship Him, and walk in His ways, for therein we find true understanding.
