By “You can do it” is common encouragement towards excellence from a teacher to a student at school, from a coach to an athlete on the field, or from a parent to a child in the home. It is also the encouragement from the aged Moses to adults who are going to outlive him.
With the privilege of receiving teaching at school, comes the responsibility of completing homework. With the privilege of receiving coaching on the field, comes the responsibility of finishing the race. With the privilege of receiving parenting in the home, comes the responsibility to mature. With the privilege of receiving a word from God, comes the responsibility to open the Word of God and obey it.
“For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.
Deuteronomy 30:11-14
Obedience to God is impossible without knowing God and what He requires of us. That is why God gave us His Word. Now we can know Him and obey Him. It is a privilege that comes with enablement to fulfil the responsibility. God is better than a talented teacher, a charismatic coach, or a perfect parent, so when He says “you can do it”, then put in the work. Read His Word, plant it down deep in your very soul, and live it out with visible zeal.
