Ezekiel 18:4, 20
The true God doesn’t delight in punishing people (Ezek 18:23). He will never be so unjust as to make a righteous person suffer the punishment of the sins of a wicked person (Ezek 18:20). The soul who sins shall die, his blood shall be upon himself (Ezek 18:13).
Similarly, God won’t excuse the sins of a wicked man simply because he is the father or son of a righteous man. Just like each person is judged for his own sins, so each person lives by his own righteousness (Ezek 18:9).

the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
And now the best part.
What about a wicked man who repents of his wickedness and does what is righteous? Shall the sins before repentance outweigh the righteousness after repentance resulting in condemnation, or shall the righteousness after repentance outweigh the sins before repentance resulting in life?
Or, what about a righteous man who turns away from his righteousness and does what is wicked? Shall the sins after his turning away outweigh the righteousness before it all resulting in condemnation, or shall the righteousness before his turning outweigh the sins he is now committing, resulting in life?
The answer is really “neither”. The point is not between the negativity of wickedness and the positivity of righteousness. Instead it is the nature of the repentance that determines the outcome.
Those who are righteous and then turn away and do wickedness, they will be condemned (Ezek 18:26).
Those who are wicked and then turn (repent) and do what is righteous, they will live (Ezek 18:27).
The reason for the wicked receiving such mercy, is because true repentance had taken place (Ezek 18:28).
It is therefore no surprise to have Ezekiel 18 end with these words, applicable to us all.
Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.”
