By The “will of God” is one of the most mystically evasive topics in Christianity, and there is no good reason for it. The “will of God” is clearly explained to us in His Holy Spirit’s revealed Word.
The will of God for each one of us is something that we can identify by renewing our minds with Scripture, and discerning from that renewed mind, what the good, acceptable, and perfect way forward from God for us is (Rom 12:2). It is not something to discover as much as it is something to know (Col 1:9) and understand (Eph 5:17). In fact, we should be fully assured of the will of God for us (Col 4:12)! The reason to understand and know God’s will is because the will of God is very purposeful (Eph 1:5) and directs all His plans (Eph 1:11), and on top of that all, though it is normally a great unknown mystery to mankind, He has, according to the riches of His grace, made it known to us (Eph 1:9).
The will of God is something that we get to obey, not only in our external actions, but from our very hearts (Eph 6:6). In fact, it ought to inform our regular prayer requests (1 John 5:14; Heb 13:20-21). It is the standard by which we confess and forsake our sins (Ezra 10:11); it is the standard by which we minister to others (Ps 103:21); it is something we ought to obey (Mark 3:35); it is something we need to persist in obeying even when it is difficult (Heb 10:36); and it is the reason why we can remain godly no matter what happens in this world (1 John 2:17).
We are obliged to increase in our knowledge of God’s will so we will worship, pray, and obey better.
